To kick off this mission you need to choose if you want to call the Militech Agent or approach this encounter without her help. Your choices here do have repercussions in the future.
If you already know what you want to do, here are some quick links to key points in this walkthrough for The Pickup:
Here’s what happens if you choose to take on Maelstorm yourself:
This is the guns blazing method. No phone calls, no niceties.
You can bypass conversations and instead go in as aggressively as possible by destroying the turrets and blowing up the mines at the entrance of the Militech base. Instead of having any sort of sit down meeting you can start the combat right away. You’ll still get the case with the Flathead so you can absolutely complete the mission this way if you want to spice up the fighting and tone down the dialogue.
When you reach the end you can fight Royce or stealth around him to the exit.
Here’s what happens if you work with Meredith Stout:
Call Meredith. She’s already pissed when you call her, and her attitude doesn’t improve much when you tell her you want a meeting. She’ll set the place: under an overpass in Watson, not far from where you’re supposed to meet Jackie. Hop in your car and drive.
There, Meredith will be even more aggressive. A body guard throws a swing on her command, but V explains they just want to talk. A bodyguard will plug in and hold a gun to V while Meredith asks questions. They’ll know if you lie.
During this conversation you’ll be able to use responses based on your lifepath, though they likely won’t amount to much.
All Meredith wants is for you to pay for the bot with a Militech Datashard. Be suspicious. It’s encrypted, so why don’t we take care of that first?
How to Decrypt the Militech Credit Chip
Open your menu and go to the Shards menu in your journal. Close all the Shard sections and you’ll see the Militech Datashard at the very bottom. You’ll also see three strings of code matrices:
00000 – 50 72 6F 70 65 72 74 79 20 6F 66 20 4D 69 6C 69 74 65 63 68 2E 20 55 6E
0000A – 61 75 74 68 6F 72 69 7A 65 64 20 61 63 63 65 73 73 20 69 73 20 73 74 72
00014 – 69 63 74 6C 79 20 70 72 6F 68 69 62 69 74 65 64 2E
You don’t actually need those codes for anything, though.
We recommend doing a manual save before attempting this, just in case you mess up. There’s a chance you’ll lock yourself out of the chip with only partial information. However, if you start seeing the data go wrong, you can back out of the menu with no consequence and try again.
The goal in decrypting the chip is to not only copy the daemon, but to also clean the money.
To do this, solve the bottom code first (BD BD FF 55) followed by the top sequence (55 1C E9). You need to do this perfectly in order to get both rewards. The last number in the first code, 55, is also the start of the second sequence, which is how it’s possible to get both.
So, you’ll be working toward this code: BD BD FF 55 1C E9.
If you’re having trouble with it, here’s the hacking sequence we used:
There are multiple ways to get to the solution too, though!
Once you’ve input that you’ll not only have neutralized the malware, you’ll also get a new Quickhack for free.
V will give a verbal confirmation that the Shard is clean and you’ll find the new Quickhack in your Cyberdeck called Synapse Burnout. In case you haven’t checked that in a minute, you can find the Cyberdeck menu on the bottom right of the Inventory screen.
Meet with Jackie
Jackie is waiting for you on the side of the road. The most important thing here is to talk to him about Maelstrom, though you can strike up other conversations. As shown below, if you’re a Nomad, you can talk to him about his motorcycle, and depending on your attributes, you can even comment on how it’s built. Once you’re done with the small talk, choose the Maelstrom option.
Jackie isn’t thrilled about Maelstrom and wants to know if you have a plan to deal with them. You can say…
- Doubt this’ll go smoothly (implying a fight)
- We’ll pay again, but with Militech cred. (use the Militech Datashard)
- $10000 We’ll buy it off ’em. (You’ll need to have this amount in order to, you know, buy it.)
Choose your option, then, if you’re ready to take on the mission, follow Jackie across the street to the All Foods gate. Approach the intercom and let them know Dex sent you. They’ll let V and Jackie in without much fuss.
Getting Into Maelstrom’s Base
Upon entering, immediately walk to the right past the shelves. In the back of this area is a crate with Uncommon Item Components and a Shard. Return to Jackie and continue on into the Maelstrom lair. There are plenty of random Shards and other junk to pick up along the way.
Once you get to the stairs, though, observe the Militech mines. There are lots of them lining it, and some in the upcoming doorway. It seems Maelstrom took far more than just the bot from Militech. Don’t worry, they’re not activated. If you shoot them or any other security devices, Maelstrom will be antagonistic toward V and Jackie.
Continue to follow Jackie and you’ll reach a closed door. Open it to enter the proper Maelstrom lobby. This big room is filled with literal meatbags (we don’t need to talk about it) and plenty of things to stuff V’s pockets. Someone will yell at V and Jackie, instructing them to get in the elevator, but they won’t say anything if you run around taking their grenades and ammo before you do so. Just saying!
Take the elevator to meet a delightful Maelstrom goon named Dum Dum. He isn’t as patient as the other guys and demands you sit. He’s not too inclined on letting you talk to Royce, and he won’t stand to let Jackie, well, stand either. Calm Jackie down when you see the prompt unless you’re ready to rile up this crew and start a firefight with Maelstrom. Dum Dum will eventually offer you an inhaler. Jakie isn’t thrilled about it, but it won’t hurt if you take it, or politely refuse. If anything, it’ll at least calm Dum Dum down. The bot is brought over. If you ask to see it, Dum Dum will even give you a little demonstration. V brings up they’re ready to take the bot, given that Dex technically already paid it with Maelstrom’s old boss.
Here comes Royce. He’s pissed at the mention of Brick and throws a gun at V immeditely. All answers here are on a timer, so make sure you have a plan on what you want to do. How you handle this situation determines if you get out of this guns blazing or if you walk out easily. Essentially, you’re choosing to either make enemies with Maelstrom now, or maybe make enemies with Militech. Below are guides to the various ways you can approach this mission
- Shard Cleaned, “Peaceful Exit” – Side with Maelstrom
- Give Militech the bugged Shard – Side with Militech
- Shard Cleaned, Violent Exit – Side with Militch
- Just Pure Chaos – Side with.. Militech?
Shard Cleared, Siding with Maelstrom
Tell Royce you’re ready to make a new deal. He’s pleased with that, but doesn’t ease up much. Offer the Militech shard. Money isn’t the only thing he needs, though. He wants to know who you’re working for. “Dexter DeShawn, that’s who.” V states, and that brings Royce to finally drop his gun. And his guard. If you have level 6 Body, you can take down Royce. You can also draw your weapon. Or, you can do nothing.
You can choose to draw your weapon and still get out clean.
Yes, we want a chill exit, but we can still stand up for the guy who hired V. Jackie moves swiftly with you. Now, since we are going peacefully, pay him with the Militech chip. V will inform Royce that Militech is onto them and that the datashard was originally bugged. He’ll have it checked and the room will mostly calm down. Wait for Royce to walk around the room. He’ll tell you to take the bot. Finally, it’s all yours and thanks to the magic of being a story item, it doesn’t weigh a thing.
Not long after you grab the bot alarms start going off. It seems Militech has caught on. Dum Dum instructs you and Jackie to follow him through the ventilation shaft.
Quickly grab the grenades on the wall across from the ladder (you’re going to need them later) then scale it behind Jackie. Make sure you grab what’s in this next room too! There’s a box in the back with $1000:
Keep following Dum Dum, the name of a person you absolutely want to follow into combat. Jackie asks why he’s bothering to help. He wants some extra bodies between himself and Militech, of course. We’ll see who actually makes it out of this. Continue to follow Dum Dum until you reach a short red hallway. The shooting is about to start, so make sure you’ve got the loadout you want.
You can mostly hang back and let the two groups destroy each other in the first room if you want, but be sure to collect any weapons and loot bodies along the way. Dropped weapons can be great for crafting material.
Proof of the Mole
In this first room, go straight after you drop down along the wall once the room is cleared and you’ll find this door:
Enter the room bathed in red light, and you’ll see a terminal on the far wall. Open it and look through the messages. The first one called “Transports – LOA” reveals the Militech Mole.
How to Free Brick
You’ll find Brick locked in what looks like a small closet in the second big combat room. The left side of the room has two elevated subrooms with glass windows, and his door is right between them.
As for the locked door, you have two options:
- The door controls themselves can be hacked for a few RAM to remotely trigger it, opening up the door and gaining access to Brick.
- In the room with the detonator next to Brick, look on the center table on the right to find a closed laptop, and open it to read the emails – one of which is labeled “only you guys know”. This contains the code to the door – 9691
As you open the door, Brick will warn you that a laser mine is pointing right at him – if he moves, he dies. Look into the room on the right you can find a detonator on a table by the door. If you’re feeling pretty ruthless you can detonate it and kill Brick, otherwise disable it.
After you free Brick and disable the mine, mention that he technically owes you one, and he’ll promise to help you out if you ever meet up again after this!
Fighting Through the Maelstrom Base
In the next room you’ll be faced with several Militech enemies, but the Maelstrom guys will be by your side helping. Shoot down any that give you a problem. If you’re having trouble telling friend from foe, flash your scanner to see which individuals have a red overlay. Use cover and the explosives in this room to your advantage. Leaning from behind cover is a great way to keep V out of fire too.
Clear the room and you’ll hear gunfire coming from another room that was previously closed. Kill anyone standing in your way and be sure to loot the entrance to this new corridor. There’s a Thermal Damage blade cyberware mod in this crate:
Again, you can grab tons of other stuff during this encounter too. Just watch your weight limit. There are even some Uncommon Item Components in crates during this shootout too. Just remember: the music may be urgent, but you can take your time finding things so long as you’re down for it.
Battle of the Mechs
The next room has a few more enemies and it’ll be the last room on your way to freedom. Just make sure you hit up the room at the top of the stairs before proceeding through the door.
You’ll want a lot of grenades. In the next room Royce is battling two Militech Mech. You definitely want them destroyed, so take cover and chuck your grenades. EMP grenades are especially effective against the mechs. If you haven’t changed your grenades yet, you can do so in your Inventory menu. Note that you can hack the mechs too!
These two mech deal a ton of damage, so watch your health carefully. Don’t stay in one spot for too long either. Moving around the room is your best bet for survival. Once a part of the mech is blow off, you can hit that spot to do critical damage. Royce and the rest of Maelstrom will help you in taking them down too.
Once the fight is over, you can sass Royce for his general lack of appreciation for your assistance. It’s time to get the hell out of this place. You should have earned another level (and a perk point and attribute point with it). Before you leave, though. Give this area one final sweep if you want a ton of free ammo and even an LMG called the Defender. That should be sitting on a crate in this room. Once you’re satisfied with your haul, head on out.
Militech is waiting, though. You’ve got their bot, but if you found the Militech mole’s info, so you should have nothing to fear. And you’ve got someone on the inside, at least for this one encounter.
Note: If you run too far away from the objective, you’ll get a call from Anthony Gilchrist instead of getting a show from Militech at the gate.
It turns out the Militech mole, Anthony Gilchrist, would have been in trouble if you didn’t decrypt the Shard. Since you did, he’s free to go. You save his life, and now he’s saving V and Jackie’s.
Other Playthrough Options for The Pickup
Side With Militech
If you’re looking to take out the Maelstrom gang, there are a couple of options available to you:
- Give them the corrupted Militech Shard during the tradeoff.
- When Royce gets distracted by Dexter Deshawn’s name, knock him out (requires Body 6) or pull a gun out and pull the trigger to take him out instantly.
- Don’t intervene when Jackie gets in their face
- Start shooting the moment you enter the factory
The most important thing to note here is that when the shooting starts, Militech won’t get involved, so you’ll be on your own – which may make things harder with only Jackie backing you up. This also means that Royce will be waiting for you in the final room in a mech suit – unless you kill him instantly during the negotiations (he’ll hide as soon as he scans the corrupted chip). Killing him at either point will yield an Epic Jacket, and an Iconic weapon, making it worth your while.
If you start attacking before the spider drone is brought out, you’ll have to find it in the back room past where the meeting was to take place – thankfully it’s not far, and there’s plenty of other things to loot.
The rooms ahead will only be patrolled by small groups of Maelstrom gang members who won’t automatically know of your presence, so you do have the ability to hack cameras or disable them on nearby security laptops, and try to use stealth takedowns on some of the gang members. However, the gang does employ Netrunners, and they may try to overheat you using the cameras or getting a bead on you – shoot them or the cameras to stop the hack if possible.
When you finally reach that last room, Royce may not know of your presence if you haven’t made too much noise, and you’ll be given the option to sneak past him and avoid the boss fight entirely if you wish. This means you won’t be able to get his gear, so it’s up to you how important his loot is to you, and you can hack the various devices in the room to draw his attention away from the far door on the right.
When you make it outside, whether or not you ended up using the Militech Shard, the agent will be impressed with your work, and remark that she may want to work with you again in the future.
Note: It’s not certain if you are able to keep the Militech Shard money for yourself. While you can clean the device and not give it to the Maelstrom gang, there does not seem to be a way currently to receive the money – it is unclear if this is a glitch or working as intended.
Chat with Jackie after. After the short reassurance of good teamwork, you’ll call Dex. V will give a report on the job based on what you did. But now, with the bot in hand, you can do the job he’s actually interested in. Unless you still need to meet with Evelyn. Don’t forget to sell all your junk! There’s a Drop Point right around the corner.
